George Papandreou: Imagine a European democracy without borders

According to George Papandreou, the failure of leadership in global politics and globalizing economic is close related to the global evolution of democracy. During the Ancient Greeks times, democracy was seen as revelation which provided the limits of power such as tyranny so society could participate in protecting their own freedom together. However, current democracy has changed abruptly so Europe suffered several crises. Nowadays, democracy is weakened and undermined in the global politics and economic because of the lack of trust on social potential in finding creative economical solutions. In this way, citizens are taken out of the process rather than building the process around them. For that reason, there exists a growing concentration of power and wealth among the markets whose unfunded stereotypes and fears of an economic disaster cause social inequality. As democracy cannot work without public responsibilities, this harmful global evolution of democracy causes the failure of leadership in global politics and economic. Therefore, ministers should restore confidence and trust among people and they should stand up to stop injustice and inequality.

Personal opinion:

Standing up for the right of democracy may bring several advantages and disadvantages to the society. On one hand, if people stand up for their right of representation and authorities pay attention to them, they could express ideas freely, be respected in spite of thinking different and be represented in society as everyone deserve. On the other hand, if people stand up for their right of representation and authorities do not pay attention to them but they punish citizens, the consequences could be terrible. For example, Chilean citizens are fighting for better conditions of life nowadays and the consequences of these actions are atrocious. Therefore, while I was watching the video, I asked to myself: Is it worth stand up for democracy? Isn't it better to be an 'idiot' so that the establishment keep calm and thus people do not suffer like Chilenean citizens? Undoubtedely, worth it.  In spite of possible terrible consequences, people should not permit being ignored but defend their right of being heard and represented because a world without democracy is a world without human rights.
